A native to the Ft Worth area, Midlothian Police Department Assistant Chief Kevin Johnson (‘KJ’) grew up in Everman and later moved to Mansfield, where he graduated from High School.
Upon graduation, KJ attended UT Arlington, initially majoring in music theory, but (much) later graduating with a BA in Criminal Justice. KJ was active in the ROTC Corp of Cadets and in 1997, joined the Air Force Reserve as a Security Forces Specialist with the 610th Security Police Squadron.
Johnson joined the Midlothian Police Department in 1998 as a dispatcher. He began the police academy in 1999, and was hired as a full time officer on January 1, 2000.
In 2001 his reserve unit was activated and deployed to Kuwait.
Kevin returned to the police department in 2002 and ultimately worked as a detective, field trainer, patrol sergeant and administrative sergeant. In 2009, KJ took a job at the Mansfield Police Department, where he worked as a patrol officer, a member of the SWAT team and served as president of the Police Officer Association for one year.
In 2012, KJ obtained his Masters of Science in Criminal Justice Leadership and Management from Sam Houston State University. In 2013 he returned to the Midlothian PD, pursuing an opportunity to join the leadership team. KJ was promoted to Assistant Chief in 2015. KJ currently is responsible for operations, including Patrol, Investigations and Communications. He also serves as an assistant commander of the regional SWAT team.
Kevin currently lives in Mansfield, with his beautiful wife of 17 years and their two dogs. He enjoys woodworking and is a long time Jeep enthusiast. KJ recently obtained a Private Pilot’s License and enjoys flying on the weekends while continuing his flight training.
